  • Council cannot cope with red box demand

    Jo Cave 02/05

THE COUNCIL has given up on delivering red boxes and bags to thousands of households. Recycling rates remain high as most residents get to grips with the new waste collections, but Warwick District Council has been left red-faced by their failure to anticipate the level of demand for extra containers. The newly-enlarged Sort It team has been forced to lay on more events for people to pick up their boxes themselves. Already 12,500 boxes have ...»

  • 'Bin rage' attacks on the up as householders revolt

    Jo Cave 02/05

ANGRY residents are taking out their frustration about the new waste collections on council staff. Warwick District Council reported this week that workers had suffered 'torrents of abuse' from householders since the wheelie bin scheme was introduced a month ago. But a council spokesman warned that any physical and verbal attacks on staff members would be logged and legal action would be taken against the perpetrator. The Sort It team has born the brunt of ...»

  • Clean-up bill in the thousands as travellers refuse to leave - in pictures

    Ed Holmes 02/05

CLEANING-UP after travellers camped in the shadow of Warwick Castle is set to cost the taxpayer thousands of pounds. A handful of caravans moved onto Myton Fields last week but despite a promise to Warwick District Council to move-on after a horse fair in Kenilworth at the weekend, there are now two separate English and Irish communities on the site and around 30 mobile homes. The Irish travellers moved onto Myton Fields after spending last ...»

  • Clean record under threat as binmen make a mess

    Jo Cave 01/05

HEAPS of rubbish scattered through the streets by sloppy binmen could soil Warwick District's reputation as one of the region's cleanest areas. Figures released this week reveal just one in 25 roads in the district was considered dirty in 2007 - but the new wheelie bin scheme could put an end to such a shining record. Papers, plastics and packaging littering the kerb have become a common sight on collection day as contractors Sita rush ...»
