  • Hibberdine lifts Gaydon Trophy

    30 April 2008

IT WAS the busiest week so far of the new season at Leamington & County Golf Club.
Even Sunday’s storm failed to dampen success for Mike Hibberdine who, following a recent acting role in TV’s Coronation Street, remembered his lines around the course to produce a great round that lifted the Gaydon Trophy with 82, nett 64.
The runner-up was Rod Meades 85, nett 66, while Kevin Watson 83, nett 66, Steve Osborne 86, nett 68, and Adrian Hawley 86, nett 69, also collected prizes.
No fewer than 145 golfers competed and the best gross was a one under par 71 from Jamie Goode who wins the Lockheed Rosebowl scratch prize.
The ladies contested their Gaydon Trophy on Saturday enjoying the best weather and Liz Murdoch emerged winner with 96, nett 72.
The Silver Division winner was Chris Lees 91, nett 75, with Gill Thorpe 89, nett 76, taking the runners up spot.
The Bronze Division was also a close run contest and required a last nine hole countback before Melanie Clarkson 109, nett 75, was able to claim first prize from runner-up Sandy Hudson 102, nett 75.
Earlier in the week the ladies’ 18 hole Stableford was also a Dick Cunyngham Trophy qualifying round.
Janice Lloyd was the Silver Division winner with 36 points from Margaret Sheepy and Chris Lees both with 34.
Bronze Division success went to Angela Bungard 36 points from Ali McLean 35, while Janet Hill’s 34 points collected third place.
Copper Division winner Joan Smith amassed 35 points but was chased all the way by Ann Shepherd and Helen Callow who took second and third respectively with 34 points.
Qualifiers for The Dick Cunyngham Trophy were Janice Lloyd, Angela Bungard and Joan Smith.
The Mid-Warwickshire League team got off to a flying start in their season opener at home to Whitefields by registering maximum points with a resounding 6-0 victory.
Jason Smith, Joe Owen, Jamie Goode, Kevin Rogers, Tom Wilson and Ian Jones all enjoyed comfortable wins. James Young at reserve had a walk over in his match as the visitors failed to make a full squad on the night.
Meanwhile, as part of the club’s ‘open door’ initiative free golf taster sessions are on offer with Julian Mellor, PGA Professional at Leamington & County Golf Club.
They are available for men, ladies and juniors and no golf equipment is necessary as it will be provided.
The Free Taster Sessions are on Saturday, June 7 and Saturday, August 30 at 2pm and 3pm on either day with each session lasting one hour.
Anyone wishing to reserve a place should call Julian at the Pro Shop on (01926) 428014 or alternatively email angieeadon@aol.com
Courses of lessons will be on offer to those who would like to take up the game. Also available are courses for people who although without a handicap would like to consider joining Leamington & County Golf Club in the future. More information is available from Angela Eadon.
