BRAKES finally saw their Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division play-off hopes disappear but they did stretch their unbeaten run to 11 games with a hard earned point at relegation-threatened Banbury on Saturday.

And Brakes, who will finish the season in seventh place, will also have a say in who reaches the play-offs as they entertain second placed Chesham United in their final game of the season at the New Windmill this Saturday (3pm).

Just two points separate five clubs chasing the four play-off spots and Chesam will arrive needing victory to secure their place.

Banbury were first to threaten through Danny Edmond whose well struck shot was saved by Nathan Vaughan at the expense of a corner.

Brakes responded with an effort from midfielder Alex Taylor which was comfortably held by home keeper Andy Kemp who also did well to save a fine shot from Lee Chilton.

Jacob Blyth wasted a good opportunity by heading straight at Kemp but Brakes eventually broke the deadlock after 38 minutes.

The home defence failed to deal with a cross from Lee Chilton and Lee Steele was on hand to score from close range.

Craig Owen almost doubled the advantage early in the second half with a powerful shot which flew just wide.

But Banbury got back on level terms in the 53rd minute when Ricky Johnson escaped his marker and headed home Ben Polk’s corner.

Owen went close with a free kick but Banbury should have taken the lead when former Brakes favourite Josh Blake burst clear and neatly set up Johnson who failed to hit the target with just Vaughan to beat.

Brakes responded and Chilton spurned a golden chance by blazing over from 12 yards, while Steele saw his shot on the turn smartly saved by Kemp who also produced a couple of fine saves to deny substitute David Kolodynski in the closing stages.
