Old Leamingtonians 18 Pinley 13
BUBBLING OLs finished their season in fine style by lifting the Warwickshire RFU Shield following a hard fought victory over Pinley in the final at Broadstreet RFC on Sunday.
OLs, who attempted to run the ball at every opportunity, went ahead after five minutes through captain Mark Foley who slotted over a long range penalty which was awarded for a high tackle on full back.
Pinley hit back and got their noses in front with a scruffy unconverted try which was quickly followed by a penalty.
OLs responded with the best try of the game just before half time. From well won ball by the forwards inside their own 10 metre line the speedy backs surged forward.
Ridler joined the line and outpaced several Pinley backs before drawing the full back and slipping an inside pass to winger Paul Salvin for an excellent score wide out.
Both sets of forwards cancelled each other out in the second half but OLs were rewarded as another fine threequarter move ended with winger Liam Wellings displaying his strength and speed to cross wide out .
Foley kicked a fine conversion from out on the touchline before adding a penalty to put OLs in control.
Pinley piled on the pressure in the final ten minutes but they were constantly frustrated by some superb OLs defence.
Pinley reduced the arrears with an unconverted pushoiver try but OLs defence held firm despite prop Nick Bingham being off the field for treatment following an apparent stamp on the head and second row Dan Careless being yellow carded for repeated offside.
It was an excellent display of committed rugby by the entire team which proved a fitting finale to a splendid season.
Previously, England prop Gareth Chilcott presented OLs 1st XV with the Team of the Year award in recognition of finishing third in Midlands Three West (South) at the club’s annual dinner at The Crofts on Friday.
