THE AYLESFORD Unit has been chosen as Warwick Rotary Club President’s charity of the year.

Jon Wassall selected the chemotherapy unit at Warwick Hospital as one of his charities and members have already been on the fund-raising trail with raffles and bucket collections.

Carol Connor, who is nurse consultant in charge of the unit, was invited to talk about the work of the unit at a Rotary club meeting.

She discussed how the unit has changed in the last decade, the impact of an ageing population on the NHS and the progress of the cancer unit being built at the nearby Stratford Hospital.

A donation will be made to the hospital at the end of Jon’s year as president in July.

* MATERNITY services in Warwickshire have been given a cash boost.

The South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust (SWFT) has been awarded £27,000 as part of the Government’s national drive to improve child birth.

SWFT will spend the money on two machines which provide warming therapy needed for emergency resuscitation during labour.

It is hoped the money will help hospitals across the county to reduce the number of stillbirths, neo natal deaths, maternal deaths and brain injuries.
