A FATHER whose daughter died after being born prematurely has raised more than £2,000 in her name to help other bereaved parents.
Ruby Reynolds was born at just 23 weeks and only lived for a few hours. She died in 2010, leaving dad Derek heartbroken.
Wanting to support those in a similar position, 43-year-old Derek decided to raise money for Jack’s Rainbow – a charity helping parents bereaved by sudden death.
Derek – who is from Warwick but now lives in Alcester with his partner Liz, son Jack and stepson Harry – held a bowling challenge to raise money for the charity’s latest initiative to buy a caravan in Cornwall.
The £2,100 raised through Derek’s bowling challenge will help towards the charity’s £25,000 total to offer bereaved families somewhere to go after losing a child.
Despite months of practicing, Derek fell just short of his target to score 2015 pins from 15 games of ten pin bowling – ending the challenge with a result of 1991 pins.
Planning manager Derek said: “It was a bit disappointing as I’d succeeded in my last practice attempt. However I can’t be too hard on myself as it was always going to be a challenging target, and to get 99 per cent of the way there and still have a chance right up to the final frame shows how realistic it was.”
Derek is now looking at future sporting fund-raising events and would like anyone wishing to be involved to get in touch.
