Early head start for pupils at St Margaret's

PUPILS and staff are enjoying an head start to the day at St Margaret’s CE Junior School in Whitnash.

This week the Coppice Road school launched a new club called ‘Head Start’ – an early morning running club before registration which offers pupils, and a few staff who have signed up, the chance to run laps of the school playing field to help keep them fit and healthy. Fruit and yoghurt is provided afterwards to fuel them for morning lessons.

Martyn Beeston, Head of Year 6 and PE co-ordinator, said: “Pupils run laps of the field (1/4 mile per lap), completing as many laps as they can, with the emphasis being on enjoyment and encouraging a healthy lifestyle.

“We’ve had a great response to this with over 130 children and even a few teachers signing up to take part. We are trialing it over the next four weeks, with the club running on Tuesday and Friday mornings initially. If successful, we hope to expand on this during the second half of the Summer Term.”

“I will also be tracking pupils’ progress throughout the four weeks, keeping a running total of each child’s ‘mileage’ on a spreadsheet.”
