Fifty year-old Leamington father jailed for sex with 15 year-old girl

A 50 YEAR-OLD Leamington man had sex with a vulnerable teenager 35 years his junior – even waiting outside her home to pick her up after her family were asleep.

And a judge remarked that a statement from Steven Brown’s 15-year-old victim detailing the impact the offences have had on her made ‘harrowing’ reading.

Brown, now 51, of Upper Holly Walk, pleaded guilty at Warwick Crown Court to five charges of sexual activity with a child in the summer of last year.

He was jailed for six-and-a-half years and ordered to register as a sex offender for life.

Prosecutor Andrew Baker said the girl was ‘a relatively troubled young lady’ who had been befriended by Brown, and sexual activity took place between them on four occasions in the summer of last year.

The girl said all four occasions took place at Brown’s flat, although he claimed the first time was in his car, and on least one occasion he had given her alcohol.

On the first occasion Brown took the girl to his flat where he began kissing her on the sofa, and they then went into the bedroom where they had sex.

A week later, after exchanging texts, Brown arranged to meet her ‘at the top of the road’ after her family had gone to bed, and then took her back to his flat.

He immediately told the girl to go into the bedroom and followed her in with some alcohol.

After they had had sex Brown fell asleep – and was annoyed when she woke him to say her father had texted to ask where she was, and that he needed to take her home.

They met twice more, on one occasion having intercourse – and he once threatened to tell her parents what she had been doing if she ended it.

Mr Baker added that Brown had previous convictions for battery, but none for sexual offences.

Nick Devine, defending, said Brown had children of his own, and as a result of the offences coming to light he had not seen them since his arrest, but conceded he only had himself to blame.

Judge Andrew Lockhart QC, who said the victim’s statement described the ‘devastating’ on-going effect on her, told Brown: “She was a vulnerable child, and you began to exploit her vulnerability.

“Plainly you had an ulterior sexual motive throughout, and you groomed this vulnerable girl; and things progressed to consensual activity between her, a child of 15, and you, a man of 50.

“I have read the victim impact statement. I have used the word ‘devastating,’ but the other word I could use is ‘harrowing.’ This has turned her world upside-down.

“Your gratification on four occasions has caused her immense difficulty. Plainly this is so serious that only a very long custodial sentence can be justified.”
