Leamington musicians produce their own ‘A Great Day in Harlem’ photo

MUSICIANS in Leamington set out to re-create their own moment of photographic rather than musical history at the weekend.

Bands and songsmiths from across the district gathered in Jephson Gardens for their own version of the famous photo ‘A Great Day in Harlem’.

The black and white image was taken in New York in the summer of 1958 by Art Kane, a freelance photographer working for Esquire magazine.

It has become one of the most famous photographs ever taken – featuring a gathering of some of the biggest names in jazz of the day, the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Lester Young, Thelonious Monk, and Sonny Rollins, all standing outside a Harlem apartment building.

Musicians from across the district gathered in front of the clock in Jephson Gardens for their own historic picture.

Organiser Kelly Elliot – who plays double bass with her band Kel Elliot and her Three Man Orchestra – said the recreation of the picture was a tribute to the music scene in the district.

She told the Observer: “There is such a wonderful scene and vibe at the minute with so many wonderful people that I want to remember these days forever.

“It’s very much a legacy project as I am growing more aware lately of how time moves us all on. I feel so lucky to be involved in such a wonderful scene and think this photo will be a fitting tribute.”
