Police urge residents to stay vigilant following attacks in Brussels

Leamington Editorial 23rd Mar, 2016 Updated: 28th Oct, 2016   0

POLICE are urging people to stay ‘alert and vigilant’ following terrorist attacks in Brussels.

Despite there currently being no known threat to Warwickshire, people are advised to be on their guard.

This is due to the threat to the UK from terrorism remaining severe – meaning an attack is highly likely.

In the wake of the attacks in Brussels – which saw 34 killed and hundreds injured – police are reminding people to be aware of how to protect themselves if a terror threat arises.

This can be done by viewing a four-minute public information film which provides advice on staying safe in the event of an attack.

Deputy Chief Constable Karen Manners said: “Our thoughts are with the people of Brussels following the terrible attacks which have taken place.

“I would like to stress that there is no intelligence at this time relating to any specific threat within our area and the probability of being caught up in a firearms or weapons attack remains very small.

“However we feel it is our responsibility to share this public safety guidance with you, as we would do with any other personal safety issue.

“We urge the public and businesses to be alert but not alarmed and report anything suspicious to the confidential Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321 or call 999 in an emergency.”

Islamic extremists struck Brussels airport with two attacks on Tuesday morning. A third explosion hit the Metro station an hour later.

It comes just months after terrorist attacks in Paris which saw 130 people killed.
