SCHOOLCHILDREN were safely evacuated after smoke started to fill their coach on the M40.

West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to the southbound carriageway of the motorway between the Lapworth and Longbridge Island turn offs at around 4.40pm on Wednesday evening November 26 after reports a number of people had suffered the effects of smoke inhalation.

Thirty-four children and four staff members were evacuated. Medics treated 14 youngsters aged 11 and 12 for smoke inhalation – two of which required oxygen at the scene. No one required any further treatment.

The children were picked up by a replacement coach.

The cause of the smoke has not yet been reported.
