NEW Prime Minister Theresa May was set to visit Barford on the leadership campaign trail just hours before was announced she would replace David Cameron in Number 10.
Mrs May had planned to visit a Conservative member’s home in the village to rally support, along with Warwick and Leamington MP Chris White, who had backed her leadership bid from the start.
But just before she left a Birmingham conference to make the trip to south Warwickshire, Andrea Leadsom – Mrs May’s contender to lead the country – announced she was pulling out of the race.
Her decision followed an interview at the weekend which saw Mrs Leadsom say her family would make her a stronger leader than Mrs May – who has no children – and after rumours circulated she had made up some of her CV.
Mrs May rushed back to London after the shock announcement, where it quickly became clear she would take over from Mr Cameron within a matter of days.
Speaking to the Observer, MP Chris White said he was ‘delighted’ Mrs May had won the leadership contest.
