ALVESTON Juniors’ Under-13 side narrowly missed out on a silver medal at the annual junior team tournament which this year was hosted in Rugby.
Vernon Aun and Jacob John got Alveston off to the best possible start by winning the first two matches of the tournament comfortably to take a 2-0 lead against Coventry-based Jubilee A.
However with two games to go they found themselves pegged back at 3-3 which meant it was all resting on the mixed doubles.
Ben Hudson and Ruby Sinclair won their match but there was a surprise defeat for John and his partner Amy Dunnakey which meant the honours were shared at 4-4.
In their second match, eventual tournament winners Rugby romped into a 4-0 lead after the singles and although Alveston recovered some pride in the doubles, they went down 2-6 for their only defeat of the day.
With the two toughest teams played, it was plain sailing in the final two matches as Jubilee’s ‘B team’ were comfortably dispatched 7-1 and another Coventry side, Racqueteers, were whitewashed 8-0.
It was looking good for second place until Jubilee ‘A’ surprisingly held Rugby to a draw in the final game of the day, a result which meant it was they who pipped Alveston to the runner’s-up spot.
