Brakes move out of relegation zone after Solihull win

BRAKES produced an industrious performance at a blustery New Windmill Ground to earn a deserved three points against Solihull Moors and move out for the Vanarama Conference North relegation zone.

Marcus Bignot’s side went into Saturday’s match on the back of a shaky run of results but are still regarded as one of the stronger sides in the division.

And the return of Liam Daly, Tony Breeden and Stefan Moore for the first time since making the move up the M40 provided added spice to the fixture.

The opening exchanges were fairly uneventful and there we no opportunities created of not until shortly before the half-hour mark when Reece Fleet drove a low shot well wide after Newton had half cleared his lines.

Several meaty challenges from both sides in midfield got the crowd going and Owen Story, another player to have worn the colours of both sides, latched on to a headed clearance to thrash a curving drive just past the post from distance.

Nathan Hicks put in a hard working performance and shot wide after a driving run from midfield and moments later he drew the first save of the match from Breeden who got down at his near post after some neat interplay with Newton.

Chilton then set up Goddard, who looked to beat the keeper at his near post but was denied by a fine save.

The hosts opened brightly in the second half and continued to look up for the battle.

Some tigerish play outside the Moors penalty area kept possession well with James Fry and Lee Moore working the ball out to Hicks who fired in a low cross that Newton met first time at the near post but Breeden displayed lightning quick reactions to help the ball onto the bar before blocking the follow up from the same player.

The visiting support were celebrating when Ryan Beswick headed in following a left wing corner, but the goal was quickly chalked off by the officials as Stefan Moore was impeding Ross Atkins as he attempted to claim the ball.

Newton came close again with a curling shot which traveled over the bar while at the other end some effective route one play by Brakes saw Moore flick on Breeden’s long ball to set up Omar Bogle but he was denied by a fine, full stretch save by Atkins.

The visitors looked at their most threatening for a spell but as the game drew to its conclusion it was Leamington who snatched the all important goal.

The Solihull bench screamed at their captain to stay back but with Chilton and Morley having worked the ball well on the left, the latter delivered a pinpoint cross onto the head of Newton who thumped his header into the bottom corner.

Brakes continued to press in search of another as the game entered added time with Chilton shooting just over the bar before the final whistle and Paul Holleran’s men were able to toast a welcome three points.
