WARWICKSHIRE stars are in action in the 2016 Canoe Polo World Championships which got under way in Syracuse in Sicily last week.

The Great Britain U21 men’s team began the event with a 20-0 defeat of Canada in a totally dominant display of skill with high-speed paddling and total control of the ball.

Leamington-based paddlers Matt Blackmore and Martyn Pearson are in the GB U21 men’s team.

They were followed by the U21 GB women’s team who beat Singapore 5-2 in their first game before defeating the Netherlands 5-1 in their second match.

The GB U21 women are coached by Pete Howard, a canoe and paddle designer from Compton Verney.

The senior teams’ competition started on Wednesday and the GB senior women’s team includes Stratford sisters Dani Brain, 19, and Nicole Brain, 23.

The senior GB women are coached by 1992 C2 canoe slalom Olympian Paul Brain, who has coached the team for many years.

Also travelling to the World Championships was Chris Arrowsmith, Paul’s C2 partner in the canoe slalom in the 1992 Olympics.

Arrowsmith is coaching the Canadian senior women’s team.

Competition continues all week, with the finals taking place on Sunday.
