THERE was a double celebration for Mike Vaughan Cycles riders Matt Clinton and Liz Powell after they were crowned winners of their respective categories at the Coventry Cycle Club’s 25-mile time trial event in Princethorpe.
Conditions were not ideal for riders as the mercury went past the 28 degrees mark, but the hot temperatures did not deter the Leamington duo.
It was Liz Powell’s first attempt at the course and she demonstrated her excellent form once again by storming to a new personal best time of 58.12 to win the women’s event.
And as last-man off, course-record holder Clinton started off smooth and fast, but heat exhaustion soon took its toll as he finished the second lap of the 12-mile course 30 seconds slower than his first.
It was the first time in five years that Clinton failed to set a new course record and he crossed the line in 50.36, which was one hour and 30 seconds slower than his 2014 time.
It was however enough to secure the win by over two minutes from Jon Simpkins (52.48).
This weekend sees both riders joined by Jack O’Neill on the Media Velo ten-mile time trial which is also being held at Princethorpe.
