THE WARWICKSHIRE Bears women’s wheelchair basketball team enjoyed double delight at the weekend as they won both of their matches in the British Wheelchair Basketball Women’s League.

The Bears travelled to Nottingham Wildcats Arena at the weekend for second weekend of the BWB Women’s League to try and improve on their first weekend when they came home with a win and loss in their first ever competitive games.

The Bears had two tough games over the weekend against Angels of the North 3rds and London Allstars but they rose to the challenge to see off the Angels 38-33 on Saturday and the Allstars 26-25 the following day.

It was the first time the Bears had faced the Angels and the game proved to be a tense affair in which the lead changed hands continually up until the last ten seconds when an equalising score from the Bears sent the game into overtime.

After coming back so strongly, the Bears women’s defence once more came to the fore in the added period and they moved up another gear in attack to slowly pull away and finish a marvellous game winners by five points.

Next up for the Bears was a tough, physical battle against a strong London Allstars outfit and a slow start to the game saw the Allstars go into an early lead and again the Bears had to play catch-up.

The Allstars kept their lead throughout the game until the final quarter when the Bears again upped their defensive game and forced Allstars to make mistakes which the Bears capitalised on as they went on to finish this hard fought contest winners by a single point.

The Bears’ efforts in both matches delighted coach Tom Masterson, who said: “I was really impressed and proud of the team this weekend.

“They never gave up in both games, coming from behind and winning at the end. It’s all the more impressive seeing as this is the first time we have entered a women’s team and some of the ladies have only been playing wheelchair basketball for a short amount of time.

“A big congratulations should go to Marie Hawkswood, who has had only two training sessions with the team and never played a competitive game at all and has come and done fantastically well this weekend.”

The Bears are still looking for a sponsor for the team and are always seeking to recruit new members, especially female and junior players.
