Late goal sinks Southam at Atherstone Town

A LATE Alex Naughton goal deep in added on time broke Southam United hearts on Saturday as they came away from Atherstone Town empty handed.

The visitors had looked on target to collect a point at Sheepy Road in this Midlands Division One encounter but Naughton’s late strike consigned Southam to a sixth defeat in eight league matches.

Although missing captain Ben Nicholson through injury, Southam got off to the best possible start when after only three minutes, Adders keeper Kole Barrett brought down Luke Mason just outside the penalty area and Ross Knight scored from the free kick.

Two goals by Alex Naughton after the break saw the hosts go in front, but Saints looked to have salvaged a point when Luke Mason headed home from a Tommy Weston corner to make it 2-2.

However, Naughton struck again deep in added time to complete his hat-trick and give Town a 3-2 victory that sees Saints still without a win after eight matches.
