JOSH Finch was crowned the new Junior Midland 52kg Champion after beating Jevan Johan on Sunday.

The Clearys boxer looked calm throughout the fight and despite dropping the first round, Finch fought back to win the second and dominated the third following stern instructions from coach Roy Thorton to be announced as the winner.

Finch becomes the 12th boxer from the Leamington-based amateur boxing club to claim a Midland vest and coach Edwin Cleary is pleased with what he has seen from the teenager.

He said: “Josh is another rising star and has now claimed Warwickshire and Midland titles over the last weeks in only his second season with a handful of contests.

“With his laid-back style Josh takes everything in his stride. Winning a vest was his first target. It’s a great achievement for any young boxer and more so for Josh as he’s really a novice in an elite championship.”

Finch is now preparing for the his next challenge this Sunday as he takes to the ring again for the pre-quarter-finals of the Junior Championships.

“We push on now to Sunday and we’re looking forward to the nationals. He’s a very talented lad with some fantastic boxing skills.

“Over the next two seasons he’s put in the hard work. I’m positive Josh will push on to become a national star weather it’s this season or next.”
