Old Leamingtonians’ Ladies open with a comfortable win

OLD Leamingtonians’ Ladies picked up where they left off last season by winning their first game of the season in the Midlands NC 1 thanks to a comfortable 18-0 victory over Ashfield Ladies.

The visiting side gave a strong performance and made Leams work hard, but eventually the home side put three tries past their opposition, winning 18-0.

Ashfield came out strongly and Leams struggled to get into their stride, finding themselves pushed back into their own 22 in the first 15 minutes.

A penalty in the oppositions 22 the minutes later got Leams on the scoreboard first with fly half Sam Smyth putting the ball through the posts.

Leams managed to turn around their low-scoring first 40 minutes in the second half. Number 8 Kyra Gleeson got over the tryline, but it was disallowed.

Undeterred, Leams fought hard, retaining possession and managing eventually to break through Ashfield’s defence. Gleeson powered her way over the tryline twice more, while Vice Captain Carrie Steadman secured the home side a further five points.

Forward of the match was awarded to second row Lorna Holloway, and back of the match was scrum half Liz Kennedy.
