THE 69th Annual Ladies Leamington Open Bowls Tournament featured a fantastic week’s bowling and excellent weather, except for semi-finals day which saw the heavens open, which gave the greens a good watering.

The prestigious Singles event was this year won by Warwickshire’s rising star, Kirsty Richards of Bournville, a current U25 England international, who overcame last year’s winner before defeating Rugby Town’s Pat Bax 21-12 in a well-constructed game, showing just what an accomplished singles player she is.

The Pairs Challenge Trophy went to the defeated singles finalist, Pat Bax, who joined up with Di Medhurst from Stoke, to play against local skip Sue Hornsby of Lillington and her partner Brenda Carlton of 3 Spiers.

Pat put the disappointment of her singles loss behind her to pull out all the stops and win her second final of the day.

The Mixed Pairs Challenge Trophy provided the spectators with a closely contested game, which was decided on the last end in a thrilling encounter between Trish Jarvis and John Bale of Wolvey and Elizabeth Crowther and Denis Lee of Lillington.

With the shot changing hands bowls by bowl, John Bale managed to secure the win and the game finished 27-24.

Maureen Edwards, Warwickshire’s county president, fresh from her singles triumph in Weston-super-Mare, contested the Mixed Triples Good Companions Cup final with Yvonne Bromfield and Bill Simpson (Rugby Thornfield) against Sue Hornsby, Brenda Carlton and Keith Hornsby.

Sue managed to put the morning defeat in the ladies pairs behind her to run out the winner in an evenly balanced final which finished 18-13.
