SUNDAY saw the start of the senior elite England ABA Championships and Leamington boxer Danny Quartermaine progressed to the final of the Midlands section after beating Romain Ncube in Birmingham.
The best boxers around the country will take part in the championship which has been a platform to launch the careers of Frank Bruno, Nigel Benn and new heavyweight king Anthony Joshua.
Clearys boxer Quartermaine made a slow start inside the Irish Centre in Birmingham on Sunday and looked to counter his Birmingham-based opponent.
He was able to land a few big shots but as in the second round too Quartermaine did not look his usual fired up self.
But the Clearys boxer came to life in the final round and came out of the blocks flying. Midway through the round Ncube went down after being on the receiving end of a series of relentless body and head shot and the writing was on the wall.
After taking an eight count, Quartermaine jumped back on Ncube and with a quick combination which forced his opponent to go down again and this time he could not beat the count.
Another victory for Quartermaine sets up an exciting Midland final this Sunday against Conor Jones of Birmingham Lions ABC after he came through his bout.
Elsewhere, after having her shot at the National Junior title postponed, Morgan Ansell will travel to Birtley this Sunday to take on Jacey Birch in the 44kg category.
The 14-year-old is the latest talent to emerge from the gym and will fancy her chances against last year’s runner-up from St Mary’s ABC.
