“No one should be alone at Christmas” – Age UK issues urgent call for support

RESEARCH shows Christmas can be an especially difficult time, with one million older people in the region feeling more isolated than at any other time of year.

On Christmas Day it’s expected that 130,000 older people will eat dinner alone, 82,000 won’t get dressed, and 63,000 won’t see or speak to anyone at all.

The charity is stepping up its efforts across a variety of local services and initiatives. It is partnering with Coventry Building Society to deliver winter warmth packs to 300 older residents, supporting Dunelm’s ‘Delivering Joy’ campaign to deliver gifts to those in need, and maintaining its befriending and home support services throughout the extended holiday season.

Scott Collins, marketing officer at Age UK Coventry and Warwickshire says, “For many, Christmas is the toughest time of the year and these figures show just how many are struggling. Please check in on neighbours, friends, or anyone who may be alone. One phone call, a knock on the door, or a small act of kindness could mean more than you realise.”
