Thirty-year haircut? This one's on the house

THE old ways are the best.

The thatched roof is a quintessential feature of the English countryside, and while thatching may be something of a dying art, there are fortunately a few highly skilled thatchers left.

The Stag pub in Offchurch is currently having its thatch replaced over 30 years since it was last done.

Landlord Tim Allen told The Observer: “We’re hoping not all of the roof will need re-thatching but it is such a large area. I wouldn’t even consider changing the thatch for something modern like tiles – it’s part of the heritage of the building.”

The pub remains open for business during the work.
