‘WE must respect the decision’ to leave the EU, says an MEP from Kenilworth in the wake of the Brexit.
Conservative Member of European Parliament Daniel Dalton has spoken to the Observer about his concerns for young people following the announcement Britain was set to leave the European Union.
The 42-year-old former Arnold Lodge and Warwick School pupil – who has been an MEP for just over a year – says he is ‘deeply disappointed’ with the UK’s decision to leave the European Union after the victory of the leave campaign.
Mr Dalton – who previously played club cricket for Leamington – told the Observer: “I am deeply disappointed that the UK voted to leave, particularly as Warwick, Leamington and Kenilworth voted 60/40 to remain.
“I have real concerns about the affect on young people, who did not want this outcome. However we must now respect the decision, come together and make sure that we get the best deal possible for the UK with the EU and with the rest of the world.”
Mr Dalton – who is a graduate from Warwick and Coventry universities – had backed the remain campaign since the start and had warned how important the single market – which allows the UK to trade without restrictions – was for the West Midland’s region which he represents.
Despite the prospect of losing his job, Mr Dalton says he, along with the fractured government, must work together for the people of the UK.
He said: “I personally wished to see a different result, but as politicians it is our job to implement this decision and make it work for all people in the United Kingdom, negotiating as beneficial terms of exit as possible with our European neighbours.
“We need to proceed in as consensual a manner as possible, healing divisions and keeping a UK which is open and outward-looking, a free-trading nation that still affords our young people the opportunities my own generation have enjoyed.”
