Campaign to help support hate crime victims

HATE crime victims should not have to ‘grin and bear it’.

Warwickshire Race Equality Partnership (WREP) has launched a campaign to make sure people are given the right help when they are discriminated against.

WREP, in partnership with Warwickshire County Council, Warwickshire Police and the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Office, has delivered workshops around the county.

WREP chief executive Junaid Hussain said many people experienced hate incidents but did not report them.

He said: “Even if you don’t want to take it any further, it is still really important that people report their experiences in a confidential way to WREP and its partners so we can work to support individual victims or witnesses of hate incidents and crimes in the future.

“People should not have to grin and bear it.”

Hate crimes can take many forms – motivated by a hostility or prejudice based upon a person’s race, colour, ethnic origin, gender, religion, sexual orientation or disability.

The campaign comes amid national fears of a rise in hate crimes. In the week following the Brexit vote there was a five fold increase in reported racist crime.

WREP also has an online survey – www.quicksurveys.com/s/Et23S – aimed at gauging hate crime in Warwickshire.

The deadline for completing the survey is Sunday August 14.
