Myton Hospice nurse stepping into ring for charity

THE GLOVES are off for one dedicated Myton nurse.

Despite regularly completing gruelling 14 hour shifts, senior staff nurse Andy Houghton has been spending every night in the gym.

He is training to complete Myton Hospice’s Dragon Boat Race on the Avon on September 18 and a boxing match on September 16 at Sports Connexion in Coventry.

Andy, who has worked for the hospice for six years, hopes to raise £1,000.

He said: “As a senior nurse on the inpatient unit at Warwick Myton Hospice, I have witnessed first-hand how much of a difference donations can make and I therefore wanted to do my part to help raise money for the hospice.

“I wanted to take part in the boxing match because I know other fighters were willing to give up their time and train to compete and I felt inspired to do the same.

“My free time has been taken up with training and I have a boxing trainer whose mum sadly died at Myton several years ago. He has really supported me throughout my training.

“All of our care at Myton is provided free of charge and we need to raise over £8 million each year to continue providing these services.”

Tickets for the boxing cost £20 (£10 children). Call 07464 757483 to buy or find out more.

* A charity evening that raised £866 for The Myton Hospices has secured match funding from Persimmon Homes Central as part of its Community Champions initiative.
