Former teacher to stand trial over historic child sex offences

Leamington Editorial 12th Dec, 2016   0

A FORMER Leamington schoolteacher will not stand trial until late next year over a series of allegations of sexually abusing four girls a number of years ago.

David Wesley appeared at Warwick Crown Court to face 21 charges including indecent assaults on girls aged under 16 and under 14 and unlawful intercourse with a girl under 13.

The 64 year-old of Offchurch Road, Cubbington, is alleged to have committed the offences against four girls on dates between 1977 and 1992.

At the time of the allegations he was a teacher at North Leamington School, and was also a youth club leader at Cubbington Methodist Church.

Mr Wesley’s barrister Scott Coughtrie said it was ‘a very complex historical case,’ and asked for his client to have time to consider each of the allegations against him before he entered his pleas.

He pointed out the trial, which was expected to last up to six weeks, could take place until the end of October next year.

Judge Stephen Eyre QC said it was the first opportunity for Mr Wesley to plead – and a plea entered at a later date would get less credit.

He adjourned the case until March next year, and Wesley was granted bail with conditions that he has no contact with a number of witnesses and no unsupervised contact with any child under the age of 16.
