Former council offices to be transformed into pub and hotel

FORMER council offices in Warwick are set to be transformed into a pub and hotel despite a number of objections.

The Grade II listed property at 16 Old Square is currently owned by Warwickshire County Council but will be taken over by The City Pub Company PLC who plan to covert it to a pub and ten bedroom hotel after plans were given the green light.

Warwick District Council received a number of objections regarding the proposals, with residents and nearby business owners concerned about the increase in traffic and impact on nearby businesses.

Georgina Atkinson from The Old Post Office said: “Old Square currently has three licensed premises operating as restaurants – a further public house would very much change the dynamic of Old Square. It will lead to a very high volume of foot and vehicle traffic during the day and very late into the evening which will be extremely disruptive for residents.

“I do not believe that changing this building into a large public house, which has applied to stay open until 1am, is in keeping with Warwick and is potentially setting a precedent that will dramatically alter the appeal, culture and vibe of Warwick.”

Consultancy business Chillimint based next door also voiced their concerns.

A spokesman said: “We chose this building and location because of its wonderful history and architecture and the fact that it is in a quieter section of the town. Being close to St Mary’s Church, it offers a wonderful character and ambience and we regularly entertain many clients and executives from all over Europe who regularly stay at the hotels in Warwick.

“This is a vital part of our proposition to secure client business and will be damaged if this application goes ahead.”

The three-storey building, which was designed by local architect Frederick Holyoake Moore, will include a garden area covered by a pergola and create around 20 jobs.
