Plans for 1,400 homes in Kenilworth to be discussed by council bosses

MASSIVE plans for 1,400 new homes in Kenilworth will be discussed by council chiefs next week.

Warwick District Council’s Executive is set to agree the spending of around £30,000 to raw up a development brief for the homes, and supporting infrastructure including a new secondary school and employment land, skirting the eastern side of the town alongside the A46 by-pass.

The plans are included in the district’s Local Plan which is set to be adopted next month. The Kenilworth development would take place from adoption up to 2029.

A council spokesman said: “The council recognises how complex the process of planning and implementing a development of this scale will be – balancing the needs of a growing population and maintaining and respecting the character and integrity of the area.

“The Executive has therefore been asked for their agreement to draw down funding for the preparation of a “Development Brief” which will address a range of issues.”

Those issues include roads, pedestrian and cycle routes; landscaping; wildlife; flood alleviation measures; heritage issues, including the Scheduled Ancient Monument of the Glasshouse Roman Settlement; infrastructure requirements including primary school(s) and community facilities; and inks with the town centre, open countryside and the golf course.

District development spokesman Alan Rhead said: “There are some real opportunities and complex issues associated with the development of this area and I am keen that we work proactively to put the right framework in place.

“If we get this decision right, we will be able to create a development of the highest quality for our future generations of which we can be truly proud.”
