Former Indian restaurant could be turned into student flats

Leamington Editorial 18th Oct, 2017   0

A FORMER Indian restaurant could be turned into student flats.

Developers have applied to convert the Zaika Lounge in Kenilworth into six flats with 27 bedrooms.

The restaurant on the corner of Clarendon Road and Warwick Road would be extended if permission was granted. The accommodation would spread across four floors, with each flat containing a shared kitchen and lounge and each bathroom with an ensuite. There would also be a total of five parking spaces.

But Kenilworth Town Council has objected to the plans.

Town clerk Maggie Field said: “Members objected to this proposal. They considered car parking to be inadequate for such a building outside the town centre.

“Members noted that Kenilworth tends to attract post graduate students, who were more likely to have cars. Such issues were exacerbated by the existing presence of an House in Multiple Occupation (HMO) next door.”

Warwick District Council has yet to decide on whether to grant the application.
