Williams loses out to old rival Ngwenya in Sheffield

BOXING: THERE was disappointment for Lewis Williams on Thursday as the talented teenager lost out to Natty Ngwenya, but coach Edwin Cleary was keen to take the positives from his performance.

Williams faced Ngwenya for the third time, and his opponent proved an awkward character from round one as Williams was restricted when using his right jab.

The Clearys fighter did well to avoid three of Ngwenya’s wild swings and stood his ground throughout the three round contest, which was broadcast live on the BBC.

But the officials deemed Ngwenya to be the better of the pair, and took the contest on split decision.

Coach Edwin Cleary, who made the trip to Sheffield to watch the fight, said: “Natty has been around for a long time.

“A loss in his first fight for GB will not define his career.

“Lewis did well and has been improving dramatically in recent weeks.”

Meanwhile Jake Finch also lost out by a fine margin when he fought 2016 ABA Quarter Finalist Jake Lock.

Elsewhere Morgan Ansell was denied a fight against Savannah Stubbly after he opponent failed to reach the Bristol venue.
