A BUS driver has been praised after his vehicle caught fire outside Warwick University.

The bus was engulfed in flames near the campus on Gibbet Hill at around 9am this morning (Wednesday) before firefighters arrived on the scene. According to onlookers the bus ‘exploded’  after it caught fire.

When he noticed the flames coming from the engine, the driver stopped the bus and ensured all his passengers got off safely.

Shortly after, he was given oxygen and taken to hospital.

The driver’s actions have been praised by West Midlands Ambulance Service.

A spokesman said: “When the driver noticed the smoke and flames coming from the engine compartment of his bus, he stopped immediately and then made sure that all the passengers were off before leaving the vehicle himself.

“Due to his swift action, he was the only casualty, suffering from smoke inhalation.

“There seems little doubt that his actions ensured the situation was not considerably more serious.”

Drivers have been advised to avoid the area and Stagecoach buses to Gibbet Hill Road will divert via the A45 until further notice.
