WARWICK District Council’s headquarters had to be evacuated after a fire at Riverside House.
Firefighters were called to the site on Milverton Hill at around 2pm on Thursday (December 13) after reports of smoke in the roof space. Crews later discovered a fire in an office which started in a light fitting.
Firefighters say when they arrived the smoke began to thicken and become acrid. They cut power to the building meaning the council website and phone lines were down as were those to Bowls England which also has office space there.
Staff – of which there are around 300 at the site – were evacuated and no one else was allowed back into the building for the rest of the day.
It was out by 4pm and back to business as usual this morning (Friday) when the offices reopened.
A spokesman for Warwick District Council said: “There was smoke in the roof space of the building which triggered the fire alarm.
“The cause is still being investigated.”
