Parents of climate change strikers show support

Leamington Editorial 20th May, 2019   0

THE INSPIRED parents of young climate strikers in Leamington showed their support during a protest in the town.

The demonstration, organised by Mothers Rise Up West Midlands, raised awareness of the climate crisis and called for Warwick District Council to join a growing number of councils which have declared a climate emergency.

Simultaneous marches were held across the UK and around the world by the nationwide movement which aims to ‘fix a mess that past generations have created’.

Its formation followed the Youth Strike 4 Climate, where pupils hold demonstrations during school hours to urge the government to act on the impending climate crisis.

The some 100 protesters included Warwick and Leamington MP Matt Western and several councillors including deputy mayor Susan Rasmussen who recently launched her ‘Clean Air for Leam’ campaign.

Parent Dominic Harrison said: “Recent opinion polls have confirmed that this issue is become increasingly supported and recognised by the public thanks to the youth strikes and demonstrations. However, these will need to continue until political promises become real actions.”
