Salvation Army Housing Association residents learn some new skills

Leamington Editorial 18th Aug, 2019   0

HARD-WORKING management trainees have given residents of the Salvation Army Housing Association (SAHA) in Leamington the chance to learn new skills.

The trainees from construction firm Willmott Dixon gave their time for free to convert an unused garage at Newbold Lodge into a training space, with help from supporters and suppliers, and residents themselves.

It will give the residents at the charity’s accommodation the opportunity to develop skills and to gain a CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card, demonstrating they are proficient enough to work on a professional building site.

Project lead Jordan Rees said: “The work the Salvation Army Housing Association undertakes has such a positive impact on the lives of young people, so I’m proud that we’re able to give something back to this amazing organisation and am massively grateful to our supply chain partners, so many of whom have committed their time and expertise to assist in delivering this project.”

Alongside the training space, the works also included refurbishment of the garden, including new paving and a barbecue, alongside vegetable planters for residents to grow their own produce.

SAHA provides accommodation and support for the homeless, people recovering from drug and alcohol-related issues, the elderly requiring care, families fleeing domestic violence, ex-offenders, and people with learning disabilities.

SAHA’s John Gately said: “Enabling the residents to assist in the delivery of the new space by training them on how to lay flooring provided both a sense of ownership and a taste of what it’s like to work in the construction industry.”
