Rotary supporting project restoring sight to those in poverty-stricken countries

VOLUNTEERS are supporting a project to restore vision to those living in poverty.

Warwick Rotary Club has donated to the ‘Avoidable Blindness’ programme which helps establish eye clinics in India and Africa.

There are some 60 Rotary-funded eye hospitals which provide free eye care to the poor, including cataract operations and medication. The project began 20 years ago thanks to local Rotary clubs and grant funding from Rotary International.

Causes of problems include poor diet, genetic defects, poor education, living standards and hygiene.

Charity trustee John Miles returned to Warwick to update members.

He told them some 117,000 cataract operations were undertaken last year and work was underway to set up more hospitals in the Middle East, Kenya, and Nigeria.

The Warwick club donated £100 to the cause and praised Mr Miles’ dedicated work.
