Care leavers in Warwickshire celebrate new chapter

CARE leavers in Warwickshire celebrated their achievements with a party.

Warwickshire County Council organised the event to mark National Care Leavers’ Week.

A pop-up-shop offered free items of clothing, food, toiletries and household goods. It was set up by care leavers who wanted to help each other – especially unaccompanied asylum seekers – to set up home.

The items will also be used to make up festive hampers for those who do not have any family and will be on their own at Christmas.

Party fun included games, a climbing wall, and a chance to get up close and handle reptiles and spiders.

Care spokesman John Coleman said: “Care leavers are some of the most vulnerable members of our community and we want to do as much as we can to support them on their path to leading successful, independent lives.

“The council helps care leavers in many ways including finding suitable accommodation, continuing their education, managing their finances, helping them to stay healthy and establish good relationships. We know young people who have spent time in care can go on to achieve amazing things when guided and nurtured in the right way.”
