Calls made for GP surgery to be turned into community centre

Leamington Editorial 23rd Oct, 2020   0

CALLS have been made for a former GP surgery to be turned into a community centre.

An area needs assessment found a community centre is needed in the Cape Road and Packmores area of Warwick.

While a community office was created ten years ago and plans were in the pipeline to turn it into a centre by 2020, they have not materialised.

And now Warwickshire County Councillor John Holland and Warwick and Leamington MP Matt Western are campaigning for the Priory Medical Centre building on Cape Road to be converted.

They are hoping the centre can be created when the GP practice moves to the former Warwick Police Station site on Priory Road.

Coun Holland said: “The Priory Medical Centre will be moving to new premises next year. “The vacated building would be an ideal community centre. There is no point identifying needs unless action results.

“The Packmores Centre is an excellent start but we need a centre to meet the needs of new parents, our seniors and a youth club. This is a unique opportunity.”

And Mr Western added: “For too long, the residents of Cape Road and The Packmores have been without a comprehensive community centre to provide a wide array of services that would benefit all. Our communities desperately need investment, and I would have expected the council and government to have kept their promises to open a centre in this part of Warwick.

“I’m totally in support of a new community centre and will work with coun Holland and others to make it a reality.”
