Kenilworth rapper Miss Terious wins her first BBC music award

A BALLET dancer-turned rapper from Kenilworth is “honoured” to have received her first music award.

Miss Terious was awarded the Local Hero Award at the BBC for the AIM Independent Music Awards 2022.

She was nominated by Brody Swain from CWR BBC Radio. The award is presented annually to artists who have “demonstrated unwavering support to their community”.

Miss Terious, who likes to keep her identity a secret – never appearing in public without her mask – has performed all over the UK since she started making music two years ago and is frequently played on BBC Introducing, as well as featuring on iHeart Radio and University Radio Bath.

She told the Observer: “I feel so honoured to win this award. If you told my younger self where I’d be today she’d never have believed you. It feels like a dream come true.”

And it has been a particularly successful year for Miss Terious.

She was BBC Coventry and Warwickshire’s artist of the month in April and performed at her first festival – The Backyard Festival – in June, when she was the opening act on the acoustic stage.

But Miss Terious did not set out to be a rapper or singer. She explained that originally she was a professional ballerina but became injured.

She continued: “I found it really difficult to cope with the loss of ballet and had a bit of an identity crisis. I used to write my feelings down as poems and then one day I started rapping the poems and discovered I loved the way it felt.

“I used my knowledge of the classical music I grew up around to produce my own music to go with the lyrics. I didn’t like that all I was known for was ballet so I wanted to create a name for myself outside of the ballet world and thus Miss Terious was born.”
