BALLY Gill and Karen Fishwick take on the roles of the star-crossed lovers in the RSC’s forthcoming production of Romeo and Juliet.

Directed by deputy artistic director Erica Whyman and designed by Tom Piper, Romeo and Juliet begins previews on April 21, and runs until September 21. It will be broadcast live to cinemas on July 18, and a nationwide UK tour is planned for 2019.

Coventry-born Bally was brought up in the Foleshill area of city where he attended President Kennedy College and was part of the Belgrade Youth Theatre.

He made his RSC debut as part of The Other Place Mischief Festival in 2016, and last year appeared in Vice Versa, Salome and Coriolanus.

Romeo will be his first Shakespeare leading role.

His other credits include The Island Nation (Arcola Theatre), A Local Boy (The Arts Theatre), Dinner with Saddam (Menier Chocolate Factory), The Bureau of Lost Things (Theatre 503) and NW (BBC/Mammoth Screen).

Bally said: “Romeo is one of the most iconic Shakespeare characters of all time.

“Also it was my first introduction to Shakespeare. I watched Baz Luhrmann’s film with Leonardo DiCaprio playing Romeo when I was in year nine.

“I never thought I would get the chance to play him. I’ve got my version of what I want to do with Romeo but what usually happens is when you go into the room with the rest of the company, everything you’ve prepared or thought about morphs and changes and I can’t wait for that.

Karen will make her RSC debut playing Juliet.

She most recently appeared in Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour (National Theatre of Scotland/Live Theatre). Her other credits include Glasgow Girls (NTS/Citizens), Hansel and Gretel (Citizens Theatre), The Caucasian Chalk Circle, A Christmas Carol (Royal Lyceum, Edinburgh), Badults (BBC Three), James Kirk’s Comedy Blaps, The Illuminati (The Comedy Unit) and Tides and Telegrams (for The Winter Tradition).
