Hubble bubble toil and trouble as Macbeth returns to the RSC in Stratford-on-Avon

HUBBLE bubble toil and trouble await as Macbeth returns to the RSC stage in Stratford.

Returning home from battle, the victorious Macbeth meets three witches on the heath. Driven by their disturbing prophecies, he sets out on the path to murder.

Polly Findlay directs a contemporary production of Shakespeare’s darkest psychological thriller which runs in repertoire in the RST from March 13 to September 18.

Christopher Eccleston makes his RSC debut as Macbeth, accompanied by Niamh Cusack as Lady Macbeth.




Eccleston is well known to both television and film audiences. Roles on the small screen have included Dr Who, Our Friends in the North, and the Shadow Line, while big screen appearances have included Shallow Grave, Elizabeth and 28 Days Later.

Stage appearances included playing hamlet at the West Yorkshire tHetare back in 2002.


Cusack appeared in a string of major productions with the RSC in the mid 1980s. She has also made many tv and film appearances while continuing to work in the theatre. Her last Shakespeare outing was in The Winter’s Tale at the Globe in London in 2016.

The production will be broadcast live to cinemas on April 11.

* John Webster’s revenge tragedy The Duchess of Malfi plays in The Swan until August 3.
