Lieutenant Pigeon pianist Hilda honoured on new Coventry and Warwickshire compilation album

Leamington Editorial 3rd Jan, 2019   0

TRIBUTE is paid to a chart-topping pianist on a new compilation album of Coventry and Warwickshire musicians.

Hot Music Live Presents Volume One – a free download album ‘of music from yesterday, today and tomorrow’ – is dedicated to the memory of Hilda Woodward, who played piano with Coventry band Lieutenant Pigeon who hit the number one spot in 1972 with

Mouldy Old Dough.

Apart from her role in the band, Hilda was a well known musician and music teacher in Coventry and her home in Kingsway not only provided a base and recording studio for Lieutenant Pigeon but also many other local musicians who she supported and encouraged.

Hilda, who passed away in 1999, became the oldest female musician to appear on a number one song.

Lieutenant Pigeon drummer and vocalist Nigel Fletcher said: “Hilda Woodward was reluctant to join in on her son’s novelty/instrumental band Lieutenant Pigeon. She always felt that the generation gap would have made her into something of an outsider.

“However, when she realised how welcoming everyone was when she appeared with the group, she much enjoyed being loved by everyone. In fact she never ever regretted her time in the limelight. No one had a bad word to say about Hilda. She was good fun and had a wonderful sense of humour.”

Those tracklisting for Hot Music Live Presents Volume One – which follows two Alternative Sounds compilations – is:

Fall Girl (Anywhere), Shanade (Lessons), Two Giraffes (Clifftop Dreaming), Kel Elliott & Her Three Man Orchestra (Tell Me A Story), Chasing Deer (Colour My World), Taylor-Louise (Put In To Word), Calton Kelly (Chaos), Blind Faith (Holly-May), Izzie Derry (It All Goes Away), Wes Finch (Jackie’s Stone), Kristy Gallacher (Quicksand), Lieutenant Pigeon (Hilda’s Tonic), Chalk Drawings – Rag And Bone, The Shapes (Let’s Go To Planet Skaro alternative Mix), Phil McWalter – featuring Clare Milne, Horace Panter, Bob Jackson & Rick Medlock – (I Like Best), Stone Bear (Bring a Little Love), Clemency (Pillar To Post), The Folly Brothers (Here Come The Rains), Caleb Murray (Portrait of You) The Scatsville Busters (Where’s The Boom Boom?), Some Kinda Earthquake (Mean ‘n’ Moody Rockin’ Machine), The Jack O’Bones (I Ain’t No Hipster), Deathsex Bloodbath (Do Better), The X-Certs (Asylum), The Pristines (Some People Can’t Be Told), The Fairies Band (Random Boys), Little Girl Screaming (Bit Late For A Conscience), My Favourite Things (Syd), Flash Vegas (On Top of the World), Russian Girlfriend (Chameleon Boy), Saigon (Needles).
