A BADGER sett has been destroyed and more than 50 trees felled or damaged to create an illegal bike trail in woods in Leamington.
The “unnecessary” destruction was discovered just 50 metres away from official bike trails at Newbold Comyn.
Offenders dug out the sett to create a two metre hole and used the excess to create jumps.
Warwickshire Police’s rural crime team said this was possibly the single worst report of illegal sett destruction the team had attended.
Officers said they were investigating several leads to identify those responsible and appealed to anyone with information to contact the force.
A spokesperson continued: “This wanton destruction of woodland and habitats sits approximately 50 metres away from the official Newbold Comyn bike trails.
“It’s totally unnecessary for this to have happened considering the amazing facilities that are available on the Comyn for riders to enjoy.
“We fully appreciate that the majority of trail riders will be equally disgusted by this incident and it doesn’t represent the community that enjoys the Comyn.”
Dozens of trees have been felled or had branches torn off, with others having markings carved into the bark.
The area has been cordoned off to prevent anyone being injured.
The police spokesperson it was clear the works had been carried out without any consideration for other users of the space.
They added: “We are currently investigating several leads to identify those responsible. If you have any information relating to the matter please drop us a message or email the team on [email protected].”
There are currently extra police patrols in the area.
