Door to Shakespeare's childhood home is UK's second most Instagrammable

THE ENTRANCE to Shakespeare’s Birthplace in Stratford has been named as the second most influential door in the UK.

The 16th century door is the nation’s second most Instagrammed according to window and door manufacturer Safestyle.

The door to the Bard’s childhood home on Henley Street, which is cared for by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, featured among the top tourist hotspots on the image sharing platform – appearing nearly 350,000 times.

It lost out on first place to iconic London department store Harrods which appears over 5.1million times.

Shakespeare’s door was followed in the ranking by London’s Covent Garden restaurant The Ivy, and 221b Baker Street – museum and home to fictional detective Sherlock Holmes.

It is one of just three entries outside London – including the medieval St Edwards Church, in neighbouring Gloucestershire, at number five, and Chepstow Castle at number ten.

Safestyle estimated the potential earnings each door could make on the platform, based on rates charged by so-called influencers.

They calculated the most influential door outside of London could charge over £150 per post.

It is not the first time Shakespeare’s home has made the news for its appeal to tourists.

The trust put in an application last year to reposition the railings to better protect the building from souvenir-hunting visitors who were removing parts of the building – namely roof tiles from the porch.

Repairs were also made to some bent sections where overly-enthusiastic visitors had pushed against them over the years.
