Familiar retail face of Lillington prepares to shut after 50 years

THE LIGHTS have been turned out for the final time at a Lillington-based electrical retailer after half a century of service.

Wall’s, the television and electrical appliance business, began trading in 1970 by offering a local television repair service.

Back then most people only had one black-and-white TV with just three channels and there were very few repeats.

Televisions were considerably less reliable in those days with sets often breaking down at least once a year.

Wall’s offered a fast and reliable same-day repair service and could usually fix the problem in the house. This enabled the business to gradually expand and to open a small shop in Lillington from where they have provided a television repair service throughout the last fifty years.

Consumer electronics is changing all the time with new and exciting products being introduced, so Wall’s opened another – now closed – outlet in Leamington town centre in 1979 to display some of the latest colour televisions and hi-fi systems.

The range of products on display continued to expand including video and DVD recorders, washing machines, fridge freezers and other kitchen appliances, and most recently, flat-panel televisions.

Wall’s became an agent for Euronics, Europe’s leading independent electrical buying group, in the late 1990s. The combined buying power of hundreds of small independent electrical businesses enables them to compete on equal terms with their larger competitors, and since many consumers prefer the more personal service offered by an independent firm, Wall’s has continued to trade successfully for half a century.

But the owners have now decided that the time has come to retire.

Brian Wall said that he was sad to be closing and would like to sincerely thank all of the customers who have supported the business over the years.

However, Ashley’s of Rugby will soon be opening a branch of their business in the Wall’s premises at Cubbington Road, Lillington.

Ashley’s are a husband and wife team, Ronnie and Lisa Ashley, who run the business with a small team of staff. Toby Shone will join Ashley’s from Wall’s and will be available to offer his expertise and assistance to all of Wall’s past customers.
