GENEROUS Rotarians from Stratford have donated cash saved during lockdown to a struggling foodbank charity.
Stratford Foodbank was presented with a cheque for over £5,500 after covid restrictions impacted its fund-raising.
Manager Marion Homer received the cheque from Rotary president Cliff Armstrong before showing him around the charity’s temporary home at Stratford Methodist Church.
At the start of lockdown, Stratford Rotarian Paul Tomlinson suggested to fellow Rotarians they supported the foodbank with money they would likely save through the government’s ‘stay at home’ order. Aware of the struggle lockdown would pose for others, they agreed and came up with more than £5,000.
Marion Homer said: “We are so grateful to Rotary and hugely value our relationship with them. It was through the support of organisations like Rotary, that back in 2013, we were able to bring our service to the town in the first place. We so appreciate their continued generosity, compassion and kindness during what has been a very difficult time for many people.”
Not only have Rotary helped the foodbank, but the organisation also dug deep to raise money for the people affected by the horrific blast in Beirut.
Much of the Rotary’s charitable donations come from longstanding fundraising events – such as the Shakespeare Marathon and the sponsored golf day – which had to be cancelled this year, leaving them short of some £40,000.
Rotary have also been able to support the Shakespeare Hospice and some other local charities, despite the lack of fund-raising opportunities.
