Mystery surrounds future of historic Warwickshire hotel

Leamington Editorial 17th Oct, 2019   0

MYSTERY surrounds the future of a historic hotel near Lapworth.

When the Observer attempted to book a room on the website of the four star Wroxall Abbey Hotel the calendar showed no future availability.

And we have also tried calling the luxury hotel, set in 27 acres of parkland, but the phone rings out.

Our photographer also drove to the 19th century mansion house hotel where he found the reception closed and a number of tradesmen’s vans parked outside.

A bride-to-be, who was planning her wedding next spring at the grade II listed venue, said she had been unable to get in touch with management to find out what was happening.

The Observer understands a bride and groom had turned up last week expecting to begin their wedding celebrations only to find the hotel closed and no one around to give them any information.

The original mansion was built in the 1600s in the grounds of a 12th century abbey by the High Sheriff of Warwickshire.

It was later bought by St Paul’s Cathedral architect Sir Christopher Wren who also remodelled the nearby grade I listed chapel – commonly known as Wren’s Cathedral.

The original building was demolished in 1861 and replaced shortly afterwards with the Gothic-style mansion seen today.

It became home to Wroxall Abbey School for Girls in the 1930s until the late century before it began life as a hotel in 2001.

The hotel, situated just ten miles from the NEC and Birmingham International Airport, has been a popular venue for both weddings and conferences.

The Observer is continuing attempts to contact the hotel.
