Olympians take part in south Warwickshire school's sports day

YOUNGSTERS at a Kenilworth primary school had the ultimate sports day.

Team GB and Paralympics GB athletes visited Thorns Community Infant School as part of a national competition.

The pupils were surprised with a visit from Team GB bobsleigher Joel Fearon and Paralympics GB canoeist Rob Oliver who the took part in the day’s activities including warm-ups and races, complete with a winner’s podium.

Pupils were kitted out in Team GB and Paralympics GB gear, with medals presented by both athletes.

Olympic bronze medallist Joel Fearon said: “As a parent myself, I had a lot of fun meeting all the pupils today and getting stuck into sports day. Taking part in sports takes a lot of courage, but it also offers so much opportunity for growth. If you can bring out that bravery in kids, it’s something that’ll help them all the way through life, no matter what they go on to do.

“I was never the fastest kid in the class and I left school thinking I wouldn’t achieve much at all. A few beacons of light helped me get to where I am today and I want to be that for others. I might not have won sports day as a kid, but now, as a dad, I’m going to come back and win as much as possible.”

The Positive Energy Sports Day was part of the British Gas ‘Get Set for Positive Energy’ initiative.

Headteacher Liz Bradbury added: “The school has been buzzing with excitement in the build-up to our British Gas Positive Energy Sports Day. The pupils were especially excited for Joel and Rob to visit and having them join in the races and showing us their Olympic and Paralympic medals has been the icing on the cake. Sports day should be all about taking part and having fun with your friends – and we’ve certainly done that today.”
