Police urge drivers to take care following spate of fatal crashes in Warwickshire

DRIVERS are being urged to take care following a recent increase in road collisions in Warwickshire.

Warwickshire Police is asking drivers to pay attention and reduce their speed after five people died as a result of collisions in the county in recent weeks.

They include a collision in Alcester on Monday (July 19) in which a man died.

Four others died and 21 people were seriously injured as a result of collisions on Warwickshire’s roads between June 1 and July 9 – coinciding with an increase in traffic flow as Covid restrictions ease.

Officers say they are concerned that numbers are rising back to pre-Covid levels.

While some collisions were simple ‘damage only’ cases where drivers failed to look properly, others are much more serious.

They include a collision near Bishops Tachbrook on July 6 in which a driver died, a collision near Atherstone on July 5 which claimed the life of a motorcyclist, a collision in Wellesbourne on July 4 in which two women were seriously injured, a suspected case of dangerous driving in Nuneaton on June 19 in which a woman died and a man was seriously injured, and the death of a cyclist after a collision with a lorry in Nuneaton on June 18.

Sergeant Shaun Bridle said: “While the investigations into these collisions are ongoing, we are taking the opportunity now to remind drivers to please always take your time, and look properly before completing a manoeuvre.

“Please drive at an appropriate speed within the speed limit and look out for other road users, especially at junctions.”

Warwickshire Police is also reminding motorists to always wear a seatbelt, put mobile phones in the glove compartment while driving, and keep full attention on the road.

Road users are also asked to provide dashcam or headcam footage of potential traffic offences – such as driving dangerously or carelessly, overtaking on solid white lines, using a mobile phone while driving, or ignoring traffic lights – via ‘Operation Snap’.
